Whoever Wins, They Help
Our hometown is the famous Yimeng Mountain revolutionary base area. Back in the day, fighting the Japanese and the KMT during the civil war, they were known for their bravery. The Shandong provincial government under CCP leadership was founded near my home. My grandfather was a pre-1949 Party member. He fought in the landmine war, using homemade mines against the Japanese, and after liberation donated three landmines to the Military Museum as artifacts.

Recently I visited a village where some folks claim that when the CCP forces arrived back then, they killed chickens and made soup for the “liberators.” This chicken-soup story was even turned into a song that spread everywhere. Chatting privately with someone, I asked: how did you people back then have such foresight to know the CCP would win, instead of joining the legitimate “government forces” and at least becoming civil servants? (I’ve asked my grandpa the same question, but for xxx reasons, I won’t publish his answer.) The villager gave a very practical answer: “Actually, when the other side came, we made them soup too…”
