The University Finally Did Something Big — Software Licensed

Just before leaving work today, I received an email — the university finally did something with a conscience. From now on, all current Tongji teachers can use free licensed software. Looking forward to genuine Windows 7…

The email is as follows:

To all units:

In order to promote intellectual property protection, ensure the needs of teaching, research, and office work for computer operating systems and office software, improve the information security level of the campus network, and alleviate the inconvenience caused by Microsoft’s anti-piracy measures to teachers and students, our university signed a cooperation agreement with Microsoft (China) Co., Ltd. in March 2009 to participate in the “Microsoft Campus Software Licensing Program.” According to the agreement, the university will uniformly pay the licensing fees for relevant Microsoft software. Legitimate users on campus do not need to pay additional licensing fees to use the relevant licensed software. The relevant matters are notified as follows:

  1. Since April 2009, all currently employed faculty and staff (with employee numbers from the Personnel Department) are legitimate users. They can use their “Unified Identity Authentication” system username and password to log in to the “Tongji University Microsoft Software Volume Licensing Service Center” (http://mvls.tongji.edu.cn) to download the latest authorized version of the Campus Agreement desktop software package (products include: Windows Vista Enterprise / Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007, etc., and can freely choose to install downgrade versions such as Windows XP, Office 2003, etc.) for installation and use on campus.

  2. Licensed software can be installed on any computer in campus laboratories, public computer rooms, multimedia reading rooms, offices, and other teaching, research, management, and service locations for use by teachers and students.

  3. Users have the “right to work from home.” Each faculty member can install one copy of the Microsoft licensed software on their personal home computer.

  4. After the implementation of Microsoft campus software licensing, units on campus no longer need to additionally purchase Microsoft software (such as Windows, Office, etc.) listed in the “Download List” on http://mvls.tongji.edu.cn when purchasing desktop computers.

  5. After using Microsoft licensed software, users still need to promptly visit the campus or Microsoft patch update website (recommended: campus Windows Update at http://wsus.tongji.edu.cn) to timely fix security vulnerabilities and reduce security risks.

  6. Any user has the obligation to protect intellectual property. It is prohibited to distribute authorization codes or software copies to any individuals or organizations beyond the legitimate users mentioned above without authorization.

  7. Users who need to obtain information about common software, registration and activation methods, and operating steps, please refer to the installation guide on http://mvls.tongji.edu.cn.

  8. If users encounter problems when activating Vista, they can consult the Network Center ([email protected]).
