Beware the IT Killer — Karoshi
I’ve never reposted anything on my blog — I’ve always stuck to original content. This is my first repost, and it serves as a warning to myself. Every late night on MSN, I see many familiar IDs online or busy. Classmates, friends — don’t push yourselves too hard. Rest early.
It’s 2005. I hope that in 2005, I can have a healthy body.
For a long time, overtime has been normal for IT workers. We think we’re young, we can push for a few more years. But now problems have come…
Below is an email forwarded by a vendor’s engineer. I’d rather believe it’s true. I hope friends who see this will forward it. Cherish our bodies, starting now.
A heavy topic: a 97级 (class of ‘97) top university graduate, joined Microsoft after graduation, died last month. Only 25 — the golden age. Treasure your life, everyone. Be good to yourself.
Go to bed earlier. This story is true, because a friend works at Lianxu as a designer, and the person who died was a colleague she knew well.
Her colleague worked overtime until 6 AM every day, went home to sleep until noon, then went back to work. Five consecutive days. On the last day, went to sleep and never woke up. Was perfectly healthy before, no heart conditions. This was actually the third karoshi (death from overwork) case at their company. Hope everyone can pay attention to their health.
By the way, I heard some sad news today. Another good person in advertising died. This person was from Lianxu — not sure if they were in sales or design. They visited our company a few times. After several consecutive days of overtime, went home to sleep one night and couldn’t be woken up the next day.
Strangely, about two months ago, a female colleague from Lianxu also went the same way. She quit her job, and on the second day or so, went to sleep and never got up. The doctor said it was sudden death, likely from overwork.
Anyway, yesterday and the day before, Lianxu turned off all lights at 9 PM — nobody works overtime anymore. Everyone, take good care of your health.
Both people who died were born in their 60s (1970s). Young, strong, no history of illness… Warning signs: originally healthy, regular exercise (basketball), but after several consecutive nights of staying up late, suddenly felt very tired waking up one day! Eyes close as soon as you want to sleep! (Different from normal late-night tiredness.) And lower back pain. But at night, you feel energetic again!
Don’t think this is trivial! According to traditional Chinese medicine, overwork causes internal organ imbalance — organs start fighting each other, eventually leading to organ failure and death. Hope you’re not next!
Doctor’s advice: best to be in bed before 10 PM. Take a half to one-hour nap at noon (one hour nap equals three hours of night sleep). Young people need at least eight hours of sleep!
All you night owls out there!! Got it? Got it?? Then go to bed early! Why are you still reading!
9-11 PM: Immune system (lymph) detox time — be quiet or listen to music.
11 PM - 1 AM: Liver detox, must be done during deep sleep.
1-3 AM: Gallbladder detox, same requirement.
3-5 AM: Lung detox. This is why people with coughs cough most severely during this time — the detox process has reached the lungs. Don’t use cough suppressants, as they inhibit waste elimination.
5-7 AM: Large intestine detox — time to use the bathroom.
7-9 AM: Small intestine nutrient absorption period — eat breakfast. Best before 6:30 AM for those with health issues, before 7:30 AM for health-conscious. If you don’t usually eat breakfast, change that habit. Even eating at 9-10 AM is better than skipping it altogether.
Midnight to 4 AM: Bone marrow blood production period — must be in deep sleep, no staying up late.
